Why Mental Health Matters in Malaysia and Worldwide

Key facts from Malaysian studies and the World Health Organization (WHO).

In Malaysia, research suggests that around 1 in 3 adults will experience a mental health condition at some point in their lives, with depression and anxiety among the most common. Young people are especially vulnerable, with national surveys showing rising rates of stress, anxiety, and depressive symptoms among adolescents and university students.

Despite this, many Malaysians still delay seeking help because of stigma, fear of being judged, or not knowing where to get support. This means that treatable conditions often become more severe before people see a professional.

Globally, the World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that more than 1 in 8 people live with a mental disorder at any time. Depression is a leading cause of disability worldwide, and anxiety disorders are also highly prevalent. Yet in many countries, more than 70% of people with common mental health conditions receive no treatment. Early assessment, evidence-based care, and reducing stigma are crucial steps to improving outcomes—both in Malaysia and around the world.
